Car thief jumps into river to evade police in Ondo

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Ondo State Command, have arrested two suspected interstate car thieves. The suspects, ThankGod Unchena, 25, and Adewole Muyedeen, 53, were intercepted while driving a stolen vehicle from Lagos to Abuja.

Police Intelligence Leads to Arrest

The Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, explained that the arrest followed intelligence-gathering and technology-driven strategies. On April 30, the command received information that a silver Hyundai car, reported stolen in Lagos, was being transported to Abuja by suspected criminals.

“Through the strategic use of modern policing tools, surveillance mechanisms, and real-time information sharing, the movement of the vehicle was closely monitored and tracked along its suspected route,” Jimoh stated.

Dramatic River Escape Attempt

Operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit were deployed and nabbed the suspects at Ogbese, Akure North Local Government Area. Upon sighting the police, the principal suspect, ThankGod Unchena, attempted to evade arrest by jumping into the Ogbese River. However, the operatives pursued him into the river, demonstrating professionalism and tactical efficiency, and successfully apprehended him.

Preliminary interrogation suggests possible links to a broader criminal network. Comprehensive investigations are ongoing to uncover all individuals connected to the crime. The suspects will be charged in court after the investigation concludes.

Further investigation revealed that Unchena had picked up Adewole Muyedeen as a passenger during the journey. Unchena reportedly handed over control of the vehicle to Muyedeen upon noticing security presence, raising suspicion and leading to the second suspect's arrest. Both suspects are in police custody, and the recovered vehicle has been secured as evidence.
