Mexican authorities have arrested a senior cartel leader accused of orchestrating the live-streamed murder of a 23-year-old influencer after she broke up with his son. Ramón Álvarez Ayala, a high-ranking member of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was captured by special forces in downtown Atotonilco el Alto, Jalisco, on Thursday, according to Mexican outlet Excelsior.
The Murder That Shocked Mexico
Valeria Marquez, a fashion and beauty influencer with tens of thousands of followers, was killed in her Jalisco beauty salon in May 2025. A gunman stormed the business and shot her in the chest and head while she was broadcasting live to her audience. In the chilling footage, the assassin can be heard asking off-camera if her name was Valeria before her body slumped onto the table. A woman rushed to turn off the livestream.
The murder sparked national outrage and highlighted the dangers faced by women in Mexico, where femicides remain a persistent crisis. According to government data, an average of 10 women are killed daily in Mexico, and many cases go unpunished.
Orders from the Top
Álvarez Ayala, also known as "R-1," allegedly ordered Marquez's murder after receiving a call from his son, Francisco Álvarez, who had previously been in a relationship with the influencer. This was revealed by Omar García Harfuch, Mexico's Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, during a press conference.
"He [Álvarez] had threatened her on several occasions, and everything indicates, and this will be proven, that the son asked his father, R-1, to carry out the femicide," Harfuch stated.
Authorities have not yet arrested Francisco Álvarez or the gunman who carried out the assassination. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have promised to bring all those responsible to justice.
Broader Criminal Record
Álvarez Ayala was also wanted for the assassination of Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan, who was killed during a Day of the Dead festival in November 2025. Manzo's murder was part of a series of attacks against public officials in the violence-plagued state of Michoacán.
