Kani Ben, a dedicated cameraman with Channels Television, has tragically passed away due to severe spinal cord injuries he sustained in a devastating road accident in Bauchi State. The fatal incident occurred on Friday, February 6, 2026, along the Yashi–Yelwan Duguri Road in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
Details of the Accident and Aftermath
Ben was among 13 journalists from various media organizations who were involved in the crash while covering the commissioning of projects by the North East Development Commission (NEDC) in the state. The accident happened shortly after a delegation led by the Minister of State for Regional Development, Alhaji Uba Maigari Ahmadu, commissioned and handed over a Government Secondary School in Yelwan Duguri.
Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle carrying the journalists attempted to overtake a convoy when it veered off the road and somersaulted multiple times, ejecting the occupants. Ben, who was seated in the front of the vehicle, suffered severe spinal cord injuries as a result of the impact.
Medical Treatment and Passing
Following the crash, Ben was rushed to the Modular Theatre Complex of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBU-TH) in Bauchi, where he underwent surgery a day after the accident. Despite receiving intensive medical care, he passed away at approximately 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 15, 2026, while still undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The other victims of the crash sustained varying degrees of injuries, including head injuries, bruises, and compound fractures. They are currently receiving medical attention, with their conditions being monitored closely by healthcare professionals.
