A Kano State Magistrates' Court has issued a warrant for the arrest of a traditional ruler accused of s3xually assaulting his domestic staff member.
Traditional Ruler Faces Serious Allegations
Talban Warawa, Abubakar Idris, who serves as the village head of Warawa Local Government Area, stands accused of s3xually assaulting his housemaid. The prosecution claims the alleged assault resulted in the young woman becoming pregnant.
The case has drawn significant attention in Kano State, where traditional rulers are typically held in high esteem. The allegations represent a serious breach of trust between an employer and employee, particularly given the victim's vulnerable position as a domestic worker.
Repeated Court Absences Prompt Arrest Order
Court records indicate that the traditional leader had previously been granted bail by the court. However, the situation escalated when the accused failed to appear for six consecutive court sittings where he was scheduled to answer the charges against him.
During the recent hearing, the defense counsel, Barrister Hassan Danjuma Balarabe, appealed to the court for additional time. He assured the magistrate that his client would be presented at the next court session if granted another date.
Magistrate Takes Firm Action
Presiding Magistrate Hafsa Yahaya expressed clear dissatisfaction with the accused's pattern of absence from court proceedings. After careful consideration of the circumstances, she took decisive action.
Magistrate Yahaya directed the Commissioner of Police to immediately arrest Talban Warawa and ensure his production before the court. This strong response underscores the judiciary's commitment to ensuring that all individuals, regardless of status, face the legal process.
The case has been formally adjourned to December 3 for continuation of hearing, by which time the court expects the accused to be in custody and prepared to answer the serious allegations against him.
