A South African court has ordered the four traffic police officers accused of killing a Nigerian national to be held in custody, denying them bail. The Klerksdorp Magistrates' Court made the decision on Thursday, December 18, 2025, following a swift investigation into the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Osinakachukwu Marcus Onu.
Details of the Fatal Incident on N12 Highway
The tragic event unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday, December 17, 2025. Osinakachukwu Marcus Onu was allegedly shot during a traffic operation conducted by the officers on the N12 highway in Klerksdorp. Reports indicate that the deceased, who was legally in South Africa, was chased by the four officers. His vehicle was later discovered stalled in the middle of the road on the opposite side of the highway.
Police were alerted to the incident and responded to the scene, but found that the traffic officers involved had already left. This prompted a preliminary investigation by Klerksdorp detectives, who swiftly traced the suspects to a location in Klerksdorp.
The Accused Officers and Charges
The four accused officers, all from the National Traffic Police, have been identified as:
- Inspector Rudolph Foromo, aged 29
- Inspector Smanga Dladla, aged 31
- Inspector Colani Senzo Dlamini, aged 34
- Inspector Vusumuzi Justice Simelane, aged 36
They face a primary charge of murder, with an additional charge of defeating the ends of justice. As part of the ongoing investigation, the officers' official firearms have been seized and will undergo forensic ballistic analysis.
Court Decision and Police Reaction
The court's decision to deny bail underscores the seriousness of the allegations. The North West acting provincial commissioner, Major General Ryno Naidoo, has publicly welcomed the arrests. He commended the Klerksdorp detectives for their swift and effective response to the case.
General Naidoo also thanked members of the public who provided crucial information leading to the arrests. He urged communities to continue collaborating with law enforcement agencies to help resolve crimes. Police authorities have confirmed that investigations into the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting are continuing.
