A 42-year-old man, Howell Imoni, has been remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre by an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly raping his neighbour’s 11-year-old daughter. The incident occurred on March 22 at the defendant’s residence in Ipaja, Lagos.

Court Proceedings

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Omolara Kushanu, did not take Imoni’s plea. Instead, she ordered that the case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice. The case has been adjourned until May 27 to await the DPP’s recommendations.

Details of the Offence

The defendant, who lives at No. 2, Bangelu Street, off Command, Ipaja, Lagos, faces a single charge of rape. The prosecutor, ASP Adegoke Ademigbuji, informed the court that Imoni lured the minor to a secluded area and sexually assaulted her.

A neighbour reportedly caught Imoni in the act and raised an alarm, prompting passersby to intervene. They apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the police.

The offence is said to contravene Section 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The case continues.
