Court remands two men for kidnapping children in Kaduna

A Kaduna Magistrates’ Court has ordered the remand of two men, Danladi Usman, 23, and Nasir Ahmed, 26, in a correctional facility over the alleged kidnapping of two children in Millennium City Kaduna. The defendants, whose addresses were not provided, are facing charges of conspiracy and kidnapping.

Court Proceedings

Magistrate Mr Ibrahim Emmanuel, presiding over the case, did not take the defendants' plea because his court lacked jurisdiction over the matter. He directed that Usman and Ahmed be remanded at the correctional centre and instructed the police to return the case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice. The magistrate subsequently adjourned the case until July 26 for mention.

Prosecution's Account

Earlier during the proceedings, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Chidi Leo, informed the court that the defendants conspired with another individual still at large to commit the offence. According to Leo, on May 24 at approximately 6:30 p.m., the defendants kidnapped two children from their parents' house in Millennium City Kaduna with the intent to collect a ransom. The prosecutor stated that alert neighbours notified the police, leading to the arrest of the suspects and the rescue of the abducted children.

Legal Implications

The prosecutor noted that the offences contravene Section 247 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2020 (as amended), which prescribes the death penalty if the accused are found guilty. The case continues to attract attention as the community awaits further legal proceedings.
