Convoy Crash in Ugep

Cross River State Deputy Governor, Dr Peter Odey, reportedly escaped unhurt after an accident involving vehicles in his convoy in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area, on Sunday, August 9. The incident occurred around 2pm while Odey and his entourage were returning to Calabar from Obanliku Local Government Area, where they had attended a stakeholders' meeting on the proposed concession of the Obudu Ranch Resort.

Although Odey's condition could not be independently verified, reports indicated that some members of his convoy sustained injuries. A press bus belonging to the Government House, reportedly carrying appointees and staff attached to the deputy governor's office, lost control near an Army checkpoint in Ugep and crashed into three sandbag barriers.

Injuries and Damage

One occupant, whose name was not immediately available, was reportedly injured in the leg, while another was seen with blood around the nose. The severity of the injuries remained unknown as those involved were expected to undergo medical checks. Several vehicles were also reportedly damaged in the crash, although the extent of the damage could not be independently established.

According to a source close to the convoy, the crash happened suddenly, and the bus driver was unable to avoid the barriers. The source added that the injured were taken to a nearby clinic for treatment.

Recurring Convoy Accidents

The incident has reportedly raised fresh concerns within government circles, as it is said to be the third accident involving the deputy governor's convoy in the last two months. Checks also suggested that the vehicle pool assigned to the deputy governor's office had been significantly reduced, resulting in vehicles from Governor Bassey Otu's convoy reportedly being used when required.

This latest accident has prompted questions about the maintenance and safety of the vehicles used by the deputy governor's office. A government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "We are concerned about the frequency of these accidents. It is vital that the vehicles are properly maintained to ensure the safety of the deputy governor and his staff."

Official Response Pending

Attempts to obtain an official reaction from the Office of the Deputy Governor were unsuccessful, as officials declined to comment on the incident. Authorities were still assessing the situation, with further information on the casualties, vehicle damage, and the deputy governor's condition expected.

Residents of Ugep expressed shock at the incident, with some calling for a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash. The police in Yakurr Local Government Area have yet to issue a statement, but it is understood that a report has been filed.
