Suspected cultists have killed a young man identified simply as Marky inside a church in Aba, Abia State. The incident occurred on May 24, 2026, at approximately 12:35 p.m. at an Apostolic Church near Opobo Junction in Ogbor Hill.
According to reports, the assailants pursued the victim and shot him dead within the church premises. An anti-cultism organization, Confra Naija, stated that the killing was linked to cult activities. The organization explained that Marky had gone for sports that morning at Opobo Junction. While returning, a hit squad shot him, and he ran into the church, collapsing on the altar. The attackers followed him inside and shot him again, ensuring his death.
The spokesperson for the Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the incident. She stated that the victim's corpse has been recovered and deposited in a morgue for autopsy. Officers from the Eastern Ngwa Police Division, patrolling at Obikabia Junction, acted on intelligence about the shooting. They led a patrol team from Ohuru Division to the scene, where the deceased was found lifeless in a pool of blood.
Chinaka added that the Divisional Police Officer at Obikabia Junction received the distress call and responded promptly. Preliminary investigations revealed that the assailants pursued Marky as he ran toward the church, shooting him in front of the building before he could escape.
