The decomposing body of a four-year-old boy, Yunusa Salisu, has been discovered at the Warinje Hills in Bauchi metropolis, following a reported kidnapping from his family home by a family friend. The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the vulnerability of children even in familiar environments.

Police Investigation and Arrest of Suspect

According to police authorities, SP Nafiu Habib, the spokesperson for the Bauchi State Police Command, explained that the prime suspect, Rabiu Safiyanu, a 20-year-old friend of the victim's uncle, has been arrested and has reportedly confessed to the crime. The detectives from the 'C' Divisional Headquarters, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), apprehended the suspect after a report was filed on March 21 at approximately 11:00 AM by Salisu Yunusa, the victim's father, who resides in Nasarawa Madina Quarters, Bauchi.

The victim, Yunusa Salisu, went missing on March 18. His father informed the police that the abductor called on March 19 using a private number, demanding a ransom of N500,000. The father paid N100,000 but did not see his child returned, prompting him to report the incident to the authorities.

Details of the Crime and Confession

Police investigations led to the arrest of Rabiu Safiyanu, who lives at the same address and had free access to the house as a friend of the complainant's younger brother. The suspect confessed to taking the victim, strangling him, dumping the body at Warinje Hills, and then demanding further ransom from the family. This confession has provided crucial evidence in the case, shedding light on the heinous nature of the crime.

The police have recovered the decomposing corpse, which showed marks of strangulation, along with a rope suspected to have been used in the act. The Officer in Charge of the Police Clinic certified the victim dead, and for public health safety, the body was photographed and subsequently released to relatives for burial on site.

Police Response and Community Warning

The suspect is currently in custody, and CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, mni, psc (+), the Commissioner of Police, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to take over the case. He emphasized the need for a timely and discreet investigation to ensure prosecution. Additionally, CP Aliyu charged residents to always observe people around them and report any suspicious activities to the police, underscoring the importance of community vigilance in preventing such tragedies.
