The Delta State Police Command has confirmed that the police officer who fatally shot a suspect in Effurun, as seen in a viral video, will be prosecuted for murder. The Command's spokesperson, Bright Edafe, made this known during an interview on Channels Television's The Morning Brief on Wednesday, April 29.
Edafe stated that the officer, identified as ASP Nuhu Usman, has been transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja to face disciplinary proceedings. He described the officer's actions as unprofessional and suggested that they could only be explained by a spiritual attack.
When questioned about why Usman's face was obscured in the press statement announcing his arrest, Edafe explained that it was standard procedure.
The extrajudicial killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi by the ASP has sparked widespread outrage online. According to police reports, the incident took place on April 26, 2026, when operatives attached to Area Command Effurun acted on intelligence that the deceased had been apprehended while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.
ASP Nuhu Usman, who led the team, violated Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force by discharging his firearm, resulting in the suspect's death.
