DNA Test Confirms Grandfather Fathered Granddaughter's Child in Niger State
A deeply disturbing case of familial sexual abuse has emerged in Niger State, where a 16-year-old girl gave birth to a baby boy after being impregnated by her own grandfather. The paternity of the newborn was conclusively established through a DNA test, which showed a 99.999 percent probability that the grandfather, identified as Musa Gado, is the biological father.
Timeline of the Case and Agency Intervention
The case was officially reported to the Child Rights Protection and Enforcement Agency on October 5, 2025, by the girl's father, Lawali Baba, and the community leader known as the Mai Angwa. At that time, the teenager was already six months pregnant. According to Barrister Uma Mohammed, the Director-General of the agency, the girl was immediately placed under protective custody to safeguard both her and the unborn child.
Uma Mohammed detailed the sequence of events: "We conducted medical checks and took her to the hospital. She has been under the custody of the agency since then because we needed to protect her and her unborn child. They attempted to abort the pregnancy. As I said earlier, we are here to protect the interest of the child, which is paramount."
Failed Abortion Attempt and Birth
Prior to seeking help, the grandfather allegedly pressured the girl to terminate the pregnancy. She attempted to do so by taking unspecified drugs and injections, but these efforts proved unsuccessful. The girl remained in the agency's care until she delivered the baby boy in December 2025.
After the birth, authorities waited five weeks until both mother and child were medically stable before proceeding with the DNA test. The test, conducted at a hospital in Gwagwalada at a cost of N500,000 borne by the alleged perpetrator, confirmed Musa Gado's paternity.
Legal Proceedings and Police Involvement
Following the DNA results, the case was formally handed over to the police for criminal investigation. Wasiu Abiodun, the spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, confirmed that Musa Gado has been arrested and is currently in custody at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
"The case was reported to the police command, and a DNA test was conducted," Abiodun stated. "The Child Rights Agency is handling the case, while the police are investigating and will prosecute the suspect. Musa Gado is currently in custody, undergoing investigation."
Barrister Uma Mohammed emphasized that the next step is prosecution: "After receiving the report, the next step was to forward the case to the police for investigation. The suspect is currently in police custody at the CID, and the matter will be taken to court for prosecution."
Both the young mother and her newborn son remain under the protective custody of the Child Rights Protection and Enforcement Agency as legal proceedings advance. This case highlights critical issues regarding child protection, sexual violence within families, and the role of DNA evidence in securing justice for victims.
