A medical doctor has shared a harrowing account of being followed home from night duty and robbed at gunpoint, recounting the trauma as she mourns her junior colleague, Dr. Stephen Vanman, who was found dead with multiple stab wounds in Port Harcourt.
Doctor's Nightmare After Saving Lives
Dr. Nwa Amaka, in a detailed social media post, described how she was returning from a late shift at the hospital, having worked to save lives, when she was attacked. She said she left work around 10 p.m. and, due to exhaustion, did not realize she was being followed until she drove into her compound.
According to her account, the car doors were yanked open with such speed and force that she had no time to process what was happening. She was pulled out of the car and found a gun pointed at her forehead. The assailant slapped her, took her glasses, and flung them away before demanding she lead them to her flat.
Confrontation and Robbery
Dr. Amaka said she told the attacker, "If you know where you threw those glasses, go and bring it back because I can't move one step from here without them." The man retrieved the glasses, and she then realized a second young man was standing behind her with another gun. She led them to her flat, where her daughter opened the door, and they were pushed inside.
The robbers made her children lie on the floor while they stole her belongings. She expressed gratitude that they did not rape her or her daughters, nor kidnap any of them. In the months following the incident, she said she would shiver with fear whenever it got dark, and she could not drive at night for a long time.
Mourning Dr. Stephen Vanman
Dr. Amaka shared her story following the murder of Dr. Stephen Vanman, who left home for work and was never seen alive again. He was found dead with multiple stab wounds on Sunday, August 9, at Market Junction, along Aba Road, Port Harcourt.
She said her daughter, who knew Vanman, described him as not only a great doctor but the kind of person you would want to have in your corner. Reflecting on both incidents, she wrote, "My only 'offence' was that I was returning home from work, where I had gone to save lives. And so was Dr. Stephen's. The young man left his home to go to work and he met his untimely death."
She concluded, "May your soul rest in peace, Dr. Stephen Vanman, and be the persons who committed this act be brought to justice speedily." The post was shared by Linda Ikeji on August 13, 2026, at 12:37 PM.
