EFCC Issues Public Alert on Rising Impersonation Cases

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised a critical public alert concerning a significant increase in criminal activities involving individuals who are impersonating its officers and conducting fraudulent sting operations in major urban centers across Nigeria. In an official statement released yesterday and signed by Dele Oyewale, the head of media and publicity for the anti-graft agency, the EFCC disclosed that intelligence reports have uncovered fraudsters employing "ingenious but fraudulent means" to damage the commission's reputation while exploiting unsuspecting citizens.

Details of the Impersonation Schemes

According to the EFCC, one group of impostors is specifically targeting young people in areas such as eateries and nightlife spots. These criminals ambush their victims, falsely accuse them of involvement in internet fraud, and then proceed to dispossess them of valuable personal items. The suspects are reported to wear counterfeit EFCC uniforms and transport victims to locations that are meticulously designed to mimic the official offices of the commission, thereby enhancing the credibility of their deceptive operations.

The agency also highlighted the activities of another criminal gang that focuses on motorists. These individuals allegedly stop drivers based on their vehicle number plates, brandish weapons to intimidate them, and extort money through fabricated allegations. The EFCC has strongly urged all Nigerians to remain vigilant and to critically evaluate any claims or operations that are purportedly linked to the commission, emphasizing the importance of verifying the authenticity of such encounters.

ICPC Dismisses Viral N50 Billion Bribery Allegation

In a separate development, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has categorically dismissed a widely circulated video that alleges a N50 billion bribery scandal involving the agency. The commission described the video as false, misleading, and partially generated using artificial intelligence (AI). In an official statement, the ICPC clarified that the viral content has no connection whatsoever to its ongoing operations or investigations and has called on the public to disregard it entirely.

Statement from ICPC Spokesperson

Spokesperson Okor Odey stated that the individuals, claims, and visuals featured in the video were entirely fabricated with the intent to deceive viewers and undermine the agency's credibility. "The content being circulated is entirely false. The images, names, and narratives presented are manufactured and, in some cases, AI-generated to mislead the public," he explained. The commission further stressed that it is not currently investigating any individual, including any Senior Advocate of Nigeria, legal practitioners, or members of the judiciary, in relation to the alleged N50 billion bribery claim. This dismissal aims to prevent the spread of misinformation and to maintain public trust in the integrity of the commission's activities.
