The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government, stating the action was necessary to halt the alleged fraudulent handling of N11 billion belonging to the state. The Commission disclosed that the freeze, executed via a Post No Debit order, was a preventive measure to protect public funds from alleged looting, not a political move tied to the upcoming governorship election.
Investigation into Alleged Diversion of Funds
According to the EFCC, an investigation launched in March 2026 focuses on the alleged diversion and mismanagement of Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds, and allocations from the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC). The Commission revealed that several state officials, including the Accountant General, have already been questioned by investigators as part of the probe.
The anti-graft agency's statement, signed by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, explained that the EFCC initially had no intention of freezing the state's accounts. However, it was compelled to act after detecting what it described as "precipitate and unwarranted" transfers of large sums from government accounts into several corporate entities, beginning on August 2.
EFCC Defends Action as Preventive Measure
The Commission maintained that the Post No Debit order is a preventive measure aimed at safeguarding public resources from alleged looting, and it is not connected to the forthcoming governorship election. In a strongly worded statement, the EFCC said, "The Commission cannot watch idly while a state government's account is being pillaged," adding that the existence of an impending election cannot prevent it from carrying out its statutory responsibility to protect public funds.
This development comes amid heightened political tensions in Osun State, with the governorship election approaching. However, the EFCC insists its actions are purely investigative and non-partisan, urging Nigerians to disregard what it described as false narratives surrounding the account freeze.
Broader Crackdown on State Finances
The EFCC also disclosed that it is monitoring the finances of several other state governments across Nigeria, stressing that many are already under investigation as part of efforts to promote accountability and transparency in the management of public funds. This signals a broader crackdown on fiscal irregularities at the sub-national level.
