Tragedy in Ekiti as Man Commits Suicide After Attempting to Kill Daughter

A shocking incident has occurred in Ise Ekiti, located within the Ise/Orun Local Government Area of Ekiti State, where a middle-aged man identified simply as Segun has committed suicide after attempting to kill his own daughter.

Details of the Disturbing Event

According to sources who spoke to Punch, the man attempted to slit the throat of his elder daughter before hanging himself on a tree behind their residence. This tragic event unfolded in the early hours of Sunday, February 8, 2026, sending shockwaves through the local community.

Mr. Patrick Abayomi, a resident of Ise Ekiti, described how the scene attracted neighbours and residents who were alerted by noise from the house. "People around here said they were alerted by the noise from the house in the early hours of this morning, only to get there and see the lifeless body of the man dangling from the tree," Abayomi explained.

Community Response and Speculation

The community quickly sprang into action, rushing the approximately 12-year-old girl to a nearby hospital where she is reportedly responding to treatment. Residents are now working to contact traditional worshippers to remove the body from the tree where it remains hanging.

A source who preferred anonymity offered insight into possible motives, stating: "This development speaks a lot about the sanity of the man. I want to believe he attempted a taboo with the daughter, which made him try to kill her and later take his own life. I won't say more than that. But we thank God the girl escaped being killed by her father this morning. Our prayer now is that she recovers from the injury and the trauma."

Police Investigation Underway

The spokesperson for the Ekiti State Police Command, Sunday Abutu, has confirmed the incident and announced that authorities have launched a thorough investigation. "The Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, has directed a thorough investigation into the incident," the Police Public Relations Officer stated.

This tragic event highlights serious concerns about mental health and domestic violence within Nigerian communities, prompting calls for increased awareness and support systems to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
