Muyiwa Adekeye, the media aide to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has accused the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) of failing to provide timely medical care for the ex-governor's deteriorating eye condition while in custody.
In a statement released on Friday, June 5, Adekeye disclosed that El-Rufai complained of swollen, itchy, and reddened eyes and requested access to medical treatment. Relatives who visited him also observed the condition and pleaded with officials to facilitate care.
According to Adekeye, two ICPC officials examined El-Rufai's eyes and acknowledged the issue, but no further medical action was taken. He alleged that an official named Henry, reportedly seconded from another agency, falsely informed a family member that El-Rufai did not wish to see a doctor.
The former governor had visited an eye clinic on June 4, but his condition worsened afterward. His lawyers secured a court order granting him access to doctors and necessary treatment. Adekeye urged the ICPC to comply with the order, emphasizing that detainees are entitled to adequate medical care and protection of their rights.
As of the time of this report, the ICPC had not responded to the allegations.
