The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 51-year-old man for the brutal murder of his 19-year-old maternal cousin, a crime that followed years of alleged sexual abuse and captivity.
Suspect Apprehended at Crime Scene
Emeka Emmanuel Nwangwu, a member of a local Neighbourhood Security Watch Group, was arrested on Monday, December 1, 2025. The arrest was made by operatives from the Nsukka Urban Division with support from the Neighbourhood Watch at a pharmacy in Nsukka, where the fatal assault occurred.
The victim, Loveth Uloma Nwangwu, aged 19, had previously reported the suspect to the police. According to the command's spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, she filed an official complaint at the Umabor Division on 28th November 2025. In her report, she accused Emeka of defilement, sexual abuse, abduction, and threats to her life.
A History of Abuse and Failed Escape
Loveth's ordeal reportedly began in 2019, when she was just 13 years old. After the death of the suspect's wife, she went to live with him. She alleged that he subsequently restricted her communication with family and friends and subjected her to sustained sexual abuse.
Her attempt to flee to her family home in Enugu-Ezike, Igbo-Eze North LGA, was met with a threat from the suspect, who used a firearm to force her back to his residence in Ibeku-Opi, Nsukka LGA. There, she was locked in a room. She later managed to escape using a spare key, which led to her initial police report. The police issued her a medical report form for examination following her escape.
During mediation at the station, the suspect confessed, sought forgiveness, and promised to return her property. The family, citing close personal ties and the incestuous nature of the act, initially opted not to prosecute. They chose instead to pursue spiritual cleansing as a resolution.
Tragic Final Confrontation
This decision, however, culminated in tragedy. While Loveth was receiving treatment at a pharmacy in Nsukka, the suspect forced his way into the premises. He assaulted her and struck her head repeatedly on the floor, inflicting fatal injuries.
The victim was rushed to the hospital, where she was confirmed dead. Her remains have been deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
SP Ndukwe stated that the suspect has been re-arrested and is currently in police custody. The Commissioner of Police for Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has strongly condemned the heinous crime and the cruel manner in which it was committed.
CP Giwa consoled the bereaved family and assured the public that justice will be served. He has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (State CID) to carry out a meticulous investigation and ensure the case is charged to court within record time.
