The family of NYPD officer Rebecca De Paula is demanding a malpractice investigation after she died from complications following breast implant removal surgery in the Dominican Republic. De Paula, 31, a mother of three, contracted a bacterial infection after the procedure at a clinic in Santo Domingo, according to relatives speaking to local outlet Noticias Sin.
Officer's Death and Immediate Aftermath
De Paula passed away early on Sunday, just under two years after joining the force. She had been named Officer of the Month in March at her Bronx precinct for her "outstanding police work and dedication to the community," as highlighted in a social media post from the 46th Precinct.
Her mother told Noticias Sin that she rushed to the health center after learning her daughter was in serious condition, but arrived to find she had already died. De Paula's remains are currently held at the National Institute of Forensic Sciences and will be transferred to the United States for burial.

Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry expressed condolences in a statement: "Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our sister P.O. Rebecca DePaula, who passed away while off duty after only 18 months on the job. We ask all New Yorkers to keep her family, friends and coworkers in your prayers during this difficult time."
Retired NYPD instructor David Marmol, who trained De Paula, wrote on Instagram: "Horrible news. You was such a beautiful soul. You would say god bless you instead of hi. You had so many good questions. You had such a bright future. You will be missed by your family, friends and colleagues. May you rest in peace."
Family Seeks Answers
De Paula leaves behind three children and also worked as a pastor alongside her husband. Her family is now urging local authorities in the Dominican Republic to investigate the circumstances of her sudden death, specifically whether medical malpractice or negligence occurred during the cosmetic procedure.
The case has drawn attention to the risks associated with elective surgeries abroad, as the family seeks justice for the young officer whose life was cut short.
