Family Declines Post-Mortem Examination

The family of Mary Habila, the 26-year-old physiotherapist who died at the residence of Minister of Works David Umahi in Uburu, Ebonyi State, has rejected calls for an autopsy on her body. In an affidavit deposed at the Ebonyi State High Court on 13 July, the father, Tanko Habila, stated that while he welcomes efforts to unravel the cause of death, the family will not consent to a post-mortem examination.

“It is my family’s wish and humble appeal, notwithstanding medical and investigation protocols, to leave her body and organs intact; hence this affidavit,” Mr Habila said. He explained that the family does not suspect any foul play in her death and therefore does not wish for further investigation.

Request for Body Release

Mr Habila also formally requested that the Nigeria Police Force release his daughter’s body to the family for burial. “I also wish not to proceed further with the investigation and request that my daughter’s body be released to me for burial,” he stated. He maintained that he was not induced, coerced, or influenced in any way to make the deposition, adding that it reflects the sincere wishes of his family.

Background of the Incident

Mary Habila was pronounced dead upon arrival at the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, Uburu, on 27 June. She was part of the medical team attached to the minister and had accompanied him to his hometown. Her death sparked public outcry, prompting Mr Umahi to request a police investigation and autopsy.

However, the family opposed the autopsy and scheduled the burial for 17 July. Despite the family’s stance, the police have insisted on proceeding with the autopsy. Joshua Ukandu, the police spokesperson in Ebonyi State, stated that the command is awaiting the family or their representative before the examination can be carried out. He assured that the investigation would be “thorough, transparent, and impartial” and that updates would be provided as the case progresses.
