Father Begs Court to Compel Daughter to Marry

A father of 11, Lawal Hamisu, has approached the Shari'a Court II sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna, seeking an order to compel his 27-year-old daughter, Fatima Lawal, to find a suitor and get married. The case was heard on Tuesday, July 21.

Complainant's Plea

Speaking through his counsel, H.B. Debo, the complainant argued that his daughter, who holds a Higher National Diploma (HND), has entertained various admirers but has failed to present a serious suitor for marriage. “She should get a suitor, present him in court, and the court should marry her off since her mother has poisoned their minds against me,” Hamisu stated.

Defendant's Response

In her response, Fatima Lawal denied having any serious suitor, explaining that none of her admirers have actually proposed marriage to her. She maintained that she is not intentionally avoiding marriage but simply lacks a suitable candidate.

Judge's Intervention

The presiding judge, Malam Yakubu Abdullahi, described the case as sensitive due to the parent-child relationship involved. He indicated that he would hold one-on-one sessions with both parties to better understand the situation and provide appropriate advice. After hearing the case, the judge adjourned the matter to August 3 for a ruling.
