The Federal Government has officially debunked reports claiming that the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC) in Monguno, Borno State, was attacked. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Education, the government described the reports as false and urged the public to disregard them.
Details of the Denial
According to a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Ben Bem Goong, the ministry conducted a thorough verification with security agencies and school authorities. The statement read: “The Federal Government has received reports of an alleged attack on Federal Government Girls College, Monguno, and wishes to state categorically that no such attack occurred. The school is safe and academic activities are ongoing.”
The ministry further clarified that the report circulating on social media was a product of misinformation. It emphasized that security agencies have confirmed the safety of the school premises and its students.
Background of the Rumour
The false report had caused panic among parents and guardians, many of whom rushed to the school to check on their wards. However, the ministry’s swift response helped to allay fears. The statement added: “Parents and guardians are advised to disregard the rumour and rely only on official information from the ministry and security agencies.”
Monguno, a town in Borno State, has been a hotspot for insurgent activities in the past, but the government assured that security measures have been strengthened around educational institutions in the region.
Government’s Assurance
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to the safety of students and staff in all schools across the country. It called on the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest security post. The ministry also warned against the spread of unverified information that could cause unnecessary panic.
This incident highlights the challenges of misinformation in the digital age, where false reports can quickly gain traction. The government urged citizens to verify news from credible sources before sharing.
