The Plateau State Police Command has arrested a fifth suspect in connection with the alleged mob killing of 25-year-old model Ibrahim Mbaya in Jos. The suspect, Yusuf Christopher Beskeni, 24, was taken into custody following credible intelligence gathered by detectives investigating the case.
Suspect's alleged role in the killing
Beskeni, a University of Jos Faculty of Arts Students Association (FASA) presidential aspirant, is accused of actively participating in the assault on Mbaya, including helping to tie him to a pole while he was tortured by mob members. The attack, which occurred after Mbaya was accused of stealing an iPhone, ultimately led to his death.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, preliminary investigations revealed that Beskeni's actions were instrumental in the tragic outcome. The suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
Earlier arrests and ongoing investigation
Four other suspects were previously arrested in connection with the killing. The police have intensified efforts to apprehend other fleeing suspects, with the Acting Commissioner of Police, DCP Usman Sheikh Adamu, assuring the family of the deceased and residents of Plateau State that all those responsible will face the full weight of the law.
In a statement, Alabo said: "The Plateau State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that it has recorded another significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into the alleged culpable homicide of Ibrahim Mbaya, following the arrest of an additional suspect connected to the tragic incident."
Police assurance and community reaction
DCP Adamu pledged that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring justice for Mbaya, a University of Jos graduate popularly known as Ibee. The police spokesperson emphasized that the command is committed to thorough investigations and will not relent until all perpetrators are brought to book.
The case has drawn attention to the dangers of mob justice, with many calling for stricter measures to prevent such incidents. The police have urged the public to cooperate with ongoing investigations and report any information that could lead to further arrests.
