A fire outbreak at the popular Tejuosho Market in Yaba, Lagos, has destroyed goods worth millions of Naira, throwing traders and residents into panic. The incident occurred on Wednesday, barely one month after a three-storey commercial building on Oyabiyi Street in the same area was gutted by fire.
Details of the Incident
The fire started inside sections of the Tejuosho Modern Plaza, a multi-storey commercial complex known for its busy textile and retail businesses. Thick black smoke billowed from the building as frightened traders scrambled to rescue their merchandise while flames spread rapidly through affected shops. Videos circulated on social media captured the chaotic scene, with traders and sympathisers shouting in frustration.
Eyewitness Accounts
Several eyewitnesses accused the Lagos State Fire Service of arriving late and struggling to gain proper access to the affected sections of the building. One eyewitness who shared footage online lamented the situation, saying firefighters appeared overwhelmed while traders watched helplessly as their businesses burned.
Although the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) has not officially commented on the incident, no deaths were confirmed. However, some individuals sustained injuries during efforts to evacuate goods and escape the smoke-filled building.
Call for Improved Safety Measures
Affected business owners are once again calling on the government to improve market infrastructure, enforce stricter fire safety regulations, and strengthen emergency response systems to prevent recurring tragedies. Residents and traders around Yaba remain anxious as authorities work to fully contain the aftermath of the blaze.
