Ex-UFC Star Godofredo Pepey Found Dead in Florida Prison
Former UFC Fighter Godofredo Pepey Dies in Custody

A former UFC fighter from Brazil has been discovered dead in his prison cell in the United States. Godofredo Pepey, who was facing serious criminal charges including kidn@pping and the alleged strangling of his wife, died while in custody.

Charges and Arrest Details

Godofredo Pepey, 38, had been detained in a Florida jail since June 30. His arrest followed accusations of assault made by his wife, Samara Mello. The news of his death was confirmed to Samara and her lawyer, Gaudenio Santiago, yesterday.

In a statement to Brazilian media, Mr. Santiago addressed the situation, saying, "The death of someone in custody is a serious matter." He urged the public to avoid speculation and respect the family's privacy during this difficult time, emphasizing that all official information would come from the American authorities.

A Fighter's Career and a Public Accusation

Pepey, whose birth name was Godofredo Castro de Oliveira, hailed from Fortaleza in north-eastern Brazil. He began his martial arts journey training with his brother, a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. His professional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) career started in 2003 when he was just 15 years old.

After a three-year hiatus, he returned to active competition in 2006. Pepey made his UFC debut in 2012 and fought in the premier MMA promotion for six years before his contract was not renewed. Over his 21-match professional career, he secured 13 wins, with four coming by knockout and eight by submission.

Following his arrest, his wife, Samara Mello, took to social media to share a photo of her injuries and speak out. "I want to say what many will never say: domestic violence is real in the world of sports," she wrote. She described the issue as a taboo in the combat sports community and expressed her goal to rebuild her life and help other women.

Family Reactions and Ongoing Investigation

At the time of the arrest, Pepey's brother, who leads a fight school, acknowledged his brother's mistake. He stated that his brother would face the consequences under both man's law and God's law, while also asking that people not use the incident to pass judgment.

The circumstances surrounding Godofredo Pepey's death in prison are now under investigation by the relevant US authorities. The case has drawn significant attention to issues of domestic violence and the treatment of individuals in custody.
