The Imo State Police Command has apprehended four individuals in Owerri for allegedly being in possession of large quantities of prohibited fireworks and explosive devices.
Intelligence-Led Operations Lead to Arrests
According to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, the arrests were made on 23 December 2025 following separate intelligence-led raids at different locations within the Owerri metropolis.
The suspects have been identified as Victor Amadi, 29; Moses Okoro, 31; Ebuka Onye, 28; and Isaac Amadi, 23. The police operations resulted in the recovery of significant amounts of banned pyrotechnic materials allegedly intended for distribution.
Police Reiterate Total Ban on Explosives
DSP Okoye used the occasion to remind residents of the standing total prohibition on fireworks within the state. The ban covers the use, sale, distribution, and possession of items like knockouts and bangers.
"Any individual found violating this directive will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law," the police spokesman sternly warned. He clarified that the command's action is rooted in its commitment to protecting lives and property, especially during the festive season.
Public Urged to Celebrate Responsibly
Citing the significant dangers associated with these items, the police issued a strong advisory to residents, parents, and traders.
"Residents, parents and traders are strongly advised to desist from dealing in them," Okoye stressed. The command also encouraged community vigilance, urging the public to promptly report any suspicious activity involving explosives to the nearest police station.
Concluding the statement, the PPRO extended the command's wishes for a peaceful and safe festive period, urging everyone in Imo State to celebrate responsibly and within the bounds of the law.
