A festive chieftaincy title celebration turned tragic in the Idimu area of Lagos State when four people were electrocuted, resulting in one fatality and three others hospitalized.
The Fatal Incident Details
The tragedy unfolded on November 11 during a weeklong coronation anniversary event in the Alimosho Local Government Area. A resident who had recently received a chieftaincy title was hosting a celebration party on Anjorin Street when the incident occurred.
According to eyewitness Femi Ajiboye, who spoke with journalists during a community visit on Wednesday, November 19, the chain of events began when a sand-carrying truck attempted to access a new estate at the end of the street. The vehicle found its path blocked by one of the celebration canopies that had been mounted across the road.
The Rescue Attempt Turns Deadly
In an effort to help the truck pass, several party guests joined one of the vehicle's occupants to lift the obstructive canopy. Tragically, as they moved the structure to the side of the road, the metal frame made contact with a naked electric wire lying on the ground.
The resulting electrocution was instantaneous, catching everyone by surprise. "People could not immediately understand what was happening until they saw them fall to the ground," Ajiboye explained. "That was when it became clear that it was an electrocution."
Aftermath and Community Response
The joyful celebration immediately descended into chaos as the incident unfolded. All four victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
Another resident, who identified himself as Olajide, confirmed the tragic outcome: "The whole area became chaotic the moment the incident happened because people initially thought they had died. Four of them were taken to the hospital, but the motor boy didn't make it. The three other party guests were admitted and are currently receiving treatment."
The deceased motor boy, who remains unidentified, was confirmed dead on arrival at the medical facility. His remains were later collected by family members for burial according to community sources.
The shocking nature of the incident was further emphasized by another resident who preferred anonymity. "I saw the man when he bought diesel at the filling station, not long ago. I was shocked when they said he had died. This was someone I saw about thirty minutes ago," the resident recounted.
The tragedy has raised serious questions about public safety and electrical infrastructure in the community, particularly during large social gatherings where temporary structures are commonly erected across public thoroughfares.
