Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has publicly criticized Air Peace over a prolonged flight delay that left passengers stranded for hours at Gatwick Airport. Akindele, widely recognized as Nollywood's highest-grossing filmmaker, was among the affected travelers during the disruption, which reportedly began around 6:30 am on Friday.
Details of the Delay
According to reports, passengers were informed that the delay was caused by a bird strike involving the aircraft. Such incidents typically require thorough safety checks before an aircraft can be cleared for departure. In a post shared on her X account, Akindele expressed frustration over the situation, describing how passengers had been left waiting for hours without clear communication from the airline.
Promises Broken
She stated that Air Peace officials initially assured passengers that hotel accommodation would be provided following the delay. However, several hours later, passengers remained at the baggage claim area without access to their luggage or any confirmed arrangements. Many travelers were forced to sit on the floor, visibly exhausted after the long wait. Elderly passengers were said to be struggling, while families with children tried to manage the uncertainty and discomfort.
Lack of Basic Care
Akindele accused the airline of failing to provide basic care expected during such disruptions, including food, timely updates, and access to checked baggage. She noted that the continued delay in releasing luggage left passengers without essential personal belongings. “We have been here for hours without food or proper communication,” she said. “They promised a hotel, but nothing has happened.”
Air Peace's Response
Air Peace has yet to issue a detailed public statement on the incident. However, the airline responded directly to Akindele's complaint, apologizing for the disruption and acknowledging the inconvenience caused to passengers. In its response, the airline said the delay was not intentional, stating that safety and operational efficiency remain its priority. It added that factors beyond its control, such as bird strikes, can sometimes affect flight schedules. The airline also assured passengers that efforts were ongoing to provide adequate assistance to those affected and urged them to remain patient while arrangements were being made.
