Gas Leak Incident at Ogun School Sends 30 Students and Teacher to Hospital

A suspected gas leak at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, resulted in the hospitalization of no fewer than 30 students and one teacher on Wednesday. The incident, which occurred shortly after the morning assembly, caused widespread panic as an unidentified gaseous substance spread across the school premises, leading to symptoms such as difficulty breathing, vomiting, and fainting among those affected.

Emergency Response and Initial Confusion

Eyewitnesses reported that several students struggled to breathe, with some collapsing after inhaling the substance, prompting an immediate emergency response. All affected individuals were swiftly transported to the General Hospital in Ijebu Ode for urgent medical attention. Initial reports speculated on the source of the leak, with some suggesting a nearby gas explosion or a chemical odour from the school’s laboratory during a practical session. However, the Vice Principal of the Junior School, Mrs. Adeola Borogun, dismissed claims of an explosion, describing the situation as an unusual chemical smell that necessitated the evacuation of victims.

Government Investigation Rules Out Explosion

The Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, confirmed the incident as a gas leak but ruled out both an explosion and industrial pollution as possible causes. He stated, "We are bringing a gas analyser there now to analyse the type of gas and the concentration zone. So, that will give us the exact cause." Oresanya further clarified that there are no industrial facilities in the area capable of releasing such pollutants, emphasizing that the situation was solely a gas leakage from an undetermined source.
