A group, Aiguobasinmwin Movement Worldwide, has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating state of Benin King Square, commonly known as Ring Road, in Benin City. In a statement issued on Monday, the group described the once iconic landmark as now degraded and a public health hazard.
Current State of Ring Road
The group lamented that the area has been transformed into an illegal motor park, an unregulated trading zone, and a refuse dump site. The once scenic and pleasant ambiance has been replaced by offensive odors and blocked drainage systems, creating an eyesore for residents and visitors alike.
Call for Immediate Intervention
The movement called on the Edo State Government, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainability, and the Ministry of Transportation to take urgent action. It emphasized the need for a comprehensive restoration plan focusing on cleanliness, safety, and aesthetic appeal.
“This iconic landmark, celebrated as one of the finest places in Benin City, is now an eyesore and a public health hazard,” the statement read. The group also commended Oredo Council Chairman Gabriel Iduseri for his beautification efforts but stressed that more work is needed to ensure sustainability.
Preserving Heritage
The group urged targeted interventions in decongestion, beautification, and enforcement. “Ring Road is the heartbeat of Benin City. Let us not allow negligence to erase our heritage,” the statement concluded.
