Attack During Sunday Service

Gunmen on Sunday attacked a church in Benue State, kidnapping the pastor and several church members. The incident occurred at the Redeemed Christian Church of God in the Otukpo area, according to police spokesperson Catherine Anene.

Police Confirm Abduction

Anene stated that the assailants stormed the church during the morning service, whisking away the pastor and an unspecified number of worshippers. She said police have launched a search operation to rescue the victims.

“We received a report of the attack and have deployed officers to the area. Efforts are ongoing to track down the kidnappers and secure the safe release of all abducted persons,” Anene said.

Community in Shock

Residents expressed fear and anger over the brazen attack. A local leader, who asked not to be named, said the community is living in terror due to rising insecurity.

“This is unacceptable. Our churches are no longer safe. We urge the government to act decisively,” he said.

Rising Insecurity in Benue

Benue State has experienced a surge in kidnappings and attacks by armed groups. In recent months, several communities have been targeted, with victims including farmers, travelers, and worshippers. The state government has condemned the incident and called for calm while security forces intensify operations.
