Residents of Ologuneru in Ibadan mistakenly set fire to a Lexus RX 330 SUV, believing it belonged to a suspected kidnapper. The incident occurred on Tuesday, May 12, along the Eleyele-Ologuneru Road.
How the Incident Unfolded
According to eyewitnesses, a man hijacked the SUV after two children were left inside while their parent briefly stepped away. Commercial motorcyclists chased the suspect from the Eleyele area as he attempted to escape with the children.
During the chase, the suspect struck two people, who died at the scene. The pursuit ended near Iyana-Ekerin junction in Ologuneru, where the children were rescued.
The suspect was beaten by angry residents before police arrived. In the confusion, the mob set the vehicle ablaze, thinking it belonged to the kidnapper.
Police Response
Police officers evacuated the injured suspect, whose survival is doubted due to severe injuries. Oyo State Police spokesperson Olayinka Ayanlade confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing.
This tragic event highlights the dangers of mob justice and mistaken identity in high-tension situations.
