Inspector-General of Police, Mr Tunji Disu, has ordered the release of a trader, Love Dooshima, who was detained by the Nigeria Police Force's Abuja Command following a viral video about bread safety.
Background of the Incident
Dooshima was arrested after posting a video on Instagram on April 13, 2026, in which she expressed concern about a loaf of bread that remained fresh on her shelf for two months without spoiling. In the video, captioned “Your Bread Could Be Poisoning You,” she deliberately avoided naming any brand or showing logos to prevent controversy.
However, days later, a company identified as Bon Bread sent her a legal letter demanding N50 million in damages. Dooshima stated that the lawsuit surprised her, as her content was based on personal observation and did not target any specific manufacturer.
Dooshima’s Account
In her statement, Dooshima said: “Hello guys, you won’t believe what I’m holding in my hands. Bon bread sent their solicitors to serve me this letter. You remember the video I made three days ago about the bread that has stayed for two months in my shop without going bad? I was very intentional in that video, I didn’t mention any brand, I didn’t show their logo. I was that careful.”
She added: “Some of you in the comment section were saying ‘oh, you are a liar, you would have told us the name of the bread, how do you want us to stay away from the bread if you don’t tell us the name? You are lying, at least show the logo’ and some people were mentioning different brands, different breads, sharing their experiences with those breads. The next day, Bon bread sent me a message in my DM.”
Police Intervention and Release
Dooshima was invited by the Nigeria Police, Abuja Command, and detained before the IGP’s intervention led to her release. Supporters hailed the police chief’s action, with one stating: “The IGP is someone we know. His intervention is commendable. We were excited when he was appointed; we are urging the IGP to continue with his effort to reform the Nigeria Police Force. We are not fighting the police on this issue, we just want the right thing to be done.”
Another supporter remarked: “We are happy she has been released. To the complainant, learn from history, we have passed through this road before.”
