The Imo State Police Command has arrested Dike Chibuike Michael, a 30-year-old man from Umuolowu, Ejemekuru, in Oguta Local Government Area, in connection with a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on Sunday evening. The incident, which took place at around 6:30 p.m., involved a Lexus ES 350 saloon car allegedly being driven at excessive speed as part of an unauthorized street race near the main gate of Imo State University (IMSU).
Victim and Injuries
The collision claimed the life of Chibuike Friday, a 19-year-old male from Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, who was attempting to cross the road at the time of the crash. Another pedestrian, Bright Ukwuoma, sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment. According to police spokesperson DSP Okoye Henry Anipr, the vehicle first struck Chibuike Friday, causing the driver to lose control, and then hit Bright Ukwuoma.
Police Response and Rescue
Upon receiving the distress report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) promptly mobilized officers to the scene. The suspect was arrested and rescued from an angry mob that had gathered. Both victims were rushed to the hospital, where Chibuike Friday was confirmed dead. His body has been deposited in the morgue for preservation and autopsy. Bright Ukwuoma remains under medical care.
Commissioner's Condolences and Investigation
The Commissioner of Police for Imo State, CP Audu Garba Bosso, condemned the reckless act that led to the loss of life. He expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victim a speedy recovery. CP Bosso assured the public that justice would be served. He has directed the State Traffic Department to conduct a comprehensive investigation to determine the immediate and remote causes of the crash. The suspect will be prosecuted in accordance with the law upon conclusion of the investigation.
Warning to Motorists
The Commissioner also warned motorists against excessive speeding, reckless driving, and other traffic violations. He urged all road users to obey traffic laws and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, enforcing the law, and ensuring the safety of all residents of Imo State. The police continue to urge anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward.
