Retired ISRO Leader Confesses to Killing Wife Over Future Care Concerns

A shocking and tragic incident has unfolded in Bengaluru, where a 76-year-old retired man, formerly a team leader at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), allegedly smothered his wife to death and provided a chilling confession regarding his motives. The event, which has sent ripples through the local community, occurred on the morning of Wednesday, February 18, in the Whitefield area of the city.

Details of the Disturbing Incident

According to police reports, the accused, identified as Nageshwar Rao, used a bath towel to suffocate his 63-year-old wife, Sandhya Shri, while she was preparing lunch in their kitchen at approximately 10:15 AM. The couple resided in The Virtuoso apartment complex in Bommenahalli, a senior living community where this marks the first such violent case in many years. After the act, Rao reportedly sat near his wife's motionless body for about twenty minutes before contacting a neighbor.

The neighbor initially dismissed Rao's claim as a joke, but upon repeated insistence, rushed to the apartment to find Sandhya lifeless on the floor. Given the presence of many elderly residents in the building, an ambulance and a doctor are stationed on-site around the clock. The doctor was summoned, examined Sandhya, and declared her dead, subsequently alerting the police.

Confession and Arrest

When officers arrived at the scene, Rao was seated on a sofa and readily admitted to the crime. In his confession, he stated, "Yes, I killed her. I may not live more than 3-4 years from now. Who'll look after her after my death? We don't have close relatives in Bengaluru." This explanation points to a deeply troubling rationale rooted in anxiety about his wife's future welfare after his own demise.

However, when questioned further by a senior police officer about his motive, Rao responded with a blank stare, leaving aspects of his mental state unclear. Police have noted that Rao is under treatment for unspecified psychological issues, which may have contributed to the incident. He has since been arrested and charged with murder, with the case under active investigation.

Background and Aftermath

The couple, originally from Andhra Pradesh, purchased their flat in the senior living community three years ago. They have a daughter who lives in the United States, and authorities have informed her of the tragic event. Following the killing, Rao reportedly contemplated suicide but panicked and abandoned the plan, adding another layer of complexity to this distressing case.

This incident highlights critical issues surrounding elderly care, mental health, and the pressures faced by senior citizens living without immediate family support. As the investigation continues, the community and authorities are grappling with the profound implications of such a violent act in a setting designed for safety and comfort in later life.
