Kano Women in Distress as Tailors Vanish with Sallah Fabrics
In a heartbreaking turn of events just days before the Sallah celebrations, numerous tailors in Kano Metropolis have allegedly disappeared with customers' expensive fabrics and matching accessories. The incident has left many women, who had saved for months to purchase materials, in tears as they are unable to locate the artisans or recover their precious fabrics.
Locked Shops and Abandoned Workshops
A quick survey conducted in various tailoring hubs across the metropolis revealed that several shops belonging to male tailors have remained shut since yesterday. Neighbors and shop owners in the vicinity were unable to provide any information about the whereabouts of the missing tailors, with some workshops remaining under lock and key in the metropolitan city.
The situation has created a frantic search for replacement tailors, with those still available reportedly tripling their charges due to the overwhelming demand and short notice before the festive period. Many women who had entrusted their Sallah outfits to these artisans weeks before Ramadan are now left with nothing new to wear for the upcoming festivities.
Personal Stories of Loss and Betrayal
Hajia Maimuna Abubakar, a middle-aged woman from Janbulo, shared her distressing experience with our correspondent. "I saved for months to buy three expensive lace materials for myself and my daughter," she explained. "I took the materials to a tailor in my area three weeks ago. He measured us, collected N37,000 for labour, and promised to deliver the clothes in two days to Sallah."
When she visited his shop yesterday, she found a locked door and four other women in similar distress. "All efforts to reach the tailor on my mobile line proved abortive, as the number had been switched off," Maimuna added. "He has also abandoned his house. His neighbours told us they have not seen him for four days. What kind of wickedness is this? We trusted him with our hard-earned money and precious materials."
Monumental Betrayal Before Festivities
Another victim, Hajiya Sa'adatu Musa, a civil servant, described the situation as a monumental betrayal. She disclosed that she had purchased a costly Swiss lace fabric for N85,000 and had given it to a tailor known for his expertise in modern designs.
"I saved and bought this late last year. This was supposed to be my best Sallah outfit. Now, I have nothing," she lamented. "The man I gave my material to has disappeared. His phone is not going through. The people in the shop are also worried that they couldn't find him. This is not only disappointing but a sin."
Apprentice Confirms Sudden Disappearance
Rabiu Garba, a tailor apprentice, confirmed the sudden nature of the disappearances. "He was here on Monday, working on many clothes. When we came on Tuesday morning, we met his spot empty. We have his number, but it is not connecting," he said, adding that the tailor he works with had not given any hint of traveling.
Market Dynamics Shift Dramatically
The situation has created significant market disruption in Kano's tailoring industry:
- Remaining tailors are overwhelmed with emergency requests
- Labor charges have reportedly tripled due to high demand
- Women are moving frantically in search of available artisans
- Some victims are left with no Sallah outfits despite months of planning
This incident stands in stark contrast to recent market trends in Kano, where tailors and textile traders previously worked day and night to meet soaring demand for political attire. Markets like Kantin Kwari and Fagge had experienced unprecedented orders for fabrics and caps in specific colors during political alignment periods, with civil servants, businessmen, and party supporters preparing for rallies.
The current crisis highlights the vulnerability of customers in the informal tailoring sector and raises questions about consumer protection mechanisms during peak festive seasons. As Sallah approaches, many women in Kano face the prospect of celebrating without the new outfits they had planned and saved for throughout the year.
