A Kano Magistrates' Court has arraigned a woman, Safiya Usaini, for the alleged killing and beheading of her co-wife, Safiya Saleh, in Loko, Takai Local Government Area of Kano State. The court, presided over by Magistrate Auwal Yusuf, heard the case after police investigations concluded.
Alleged Bathroom Spying Led to Fatal Attack
According to the prosecutor, Barrister Muhammad Aliyu Umar, the suspect allegedly attacked and beheaded her co-wife with a machete. The attack was reportedly triggered by accusations that the victim had spied on the suspect while she was using the bathroom. The incident occurred in Loko, Takai Local Government Area of Kano State.
The suspect was brought before the court following the conclusion of police investigation into the alleged killing. The prosecuting counsel presented the suspect and read the charge of culpable homicide to her.
Court Declines Jurisdiction Over Murder Case
However, the court declined to proceed with the case after holding that it lacked jurisdiction to hear a murder case. The prosecutor subsequently asked the court to adjourn the matter to enable the prosecution to obtain legal advice from the government on the next step.
The court granted the request and adjourned the case until September 30, 2026, for further mention, while ordering that the accused be remanded in a correctional centre.
The case highlights the serious consequences of domestic disputes, particularly in polygamous settings, and the legal procedures involved in handling culpable homicide charges in Nigeria.
