Kwara Community Protests Death of Focus Foundation Member After 2025 Attack
Kwara Community Protests Over Focus Foundation Member's Death

Residents of the Oke Ogun community in Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State, alongside members of the Focus Foundation, have taken to the streets in a peaceful demonstration. The protest was triggered by the tragic death of Olarenwaju Babalola, a dedicated member of the foundation.

Attack and Prolonged Hospitalisation

Olarenwaju Babalola passed away on January 5, 2026, at approximately 3:00 p.m. His death was the direct result of severe complications from injuries he suffered during a violent attack on his Ilorin residence. This incident occurred much earlier, on June 1, 2025. According to an official statement from the Focus Foundation, Babalola had remained hospitalised from the date of the attack until his demise.

The foundation's Secretary, John Fasi, detailed that the assault was carried out by unidentified gunmen. The assailants invaded Babalola's home while allegedly searching for the foundation's pioneer, Mr. Temitope Stephen Bamidele. They reportedly demanded information on Bamidele's whereabouts with the clear intent to kill him. Fortunately, Bamidele was not present at the location during the attack.

A History of Threats and Community Outrage

This was not the first security threat against the foundation's leader. Stephen Bamidele had previously escaped a kidnapping attempt on June 2, 2024, at 20, Oke Ogun Close. That earlier incident had forced him to relocate from the area due to serious security concerns.

The prolonged suffering and eventual death of Babalola, who served as Bamidele's personal assistant, ignited widespread anger within the Oke Ogun community. The sense of injustice propelled residents and foundation members to stage a solidarity protest on January 7, 2026.

Demands for Justice and Security

The protesters marched to the home of the Danialu community head, carrying placards with strong messages. Their demands were clear:

  • Justice for Olarenwaju Babalola
  • Improved security measures in the area
  • Accountability for the killing

During the demonstration, foundation representatives also paid a condolence visit to the widow and children of the deceased. They honoured Babalola, describing him as a loyal, committed, and selfless individual who dedicated his life to service.

In a powerful statement, John Fasi condemned the attack, calling Babalola's death "a tragic and unjust loss." He emphasized, "Our member was attacked simply because criminals were looking for someone else." Fasi urgently called on security agencies to launch a thorough investigation, apprehend those responsible, and intensify efforts to protect lives and property in the region. He noted that persistent insecurity continues to undermine peace and development in the area.

The Focus Foundation has reiterated its unwavering demand for justice, urging both the government and law enforcement agencies to ensure the perpetrators are prosecuted and that the bereaved family receives adequate support.
