The Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, has issued a crucial clarification regarding the recent release of Nollywood actor Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, firmly stating that the actor was not acquitted of assault charges against a minor.
False Claims Spark Public Confusion
This clarification comes in response to statements made by fellow Nollywood actor Yomi Fabiyi, who had publicly claimed that Baba Ijesha had been exonerated of all charges. The Attorney General emphasized that such misinformation could distort official judicial records and mislead the public about the actual circumstances of the case.
During an interview with journalists as reported by Vanguard newspaper, Pedro provided detailed context about Baba Ijesha's release. He explained that the comic actor regained his freedom only after completing his 16-year prison sentence, which had been running concurrently. The actor had been convicted for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old foster daughter of fellow comedian Princess.
Victim's Guardian Issues Stern Warning
Princess, the guardian of the assaulted minor, has spoken out following Baba Ijesha's release. She described him as a self-confessed criminal and issued warnings to churches, landlords, and schools to keep children away from him. According to her disturbing revelations, Baba Ijesha had assaulted multiple victims, with twelve individuals having been identified during the investigation.
Princess also addressed critics who questioned her stance, boldly stating that those who believe Baba Ijesha is harmless are free to take their children to stay with him during Christmas. She further revealed that Yomi Fabiyi had made several unsuccessful attempts to secure Baba Ijesha's release through appeals, all of which were overturned by the court.
Public Outcry Over Misinformation
Nigerian social media users have expressed strong reactions to the Attorney General's clarification. Many have directed their anger at Yomi Fabiyi for what they perceive as spreading false information about the case.
One user, @bholaromobaba, suggested that both Baba Ijesha and Fabiyi should be arrested for misleading the public. Another comment from @adoyen_ questioned Fabiyi's motives, asking "What exactly is Yomi's problem, always trying to change narratives?" while calling for the arrest of online rumor peddlers.
The public sentiment largely supports the Attorney General's position, with many expressing relief that the official record has been set straight regarding this sensitive case involving the assault of a minor.
