Thirteen individuals have been sentenced to three months in prison by a Lagos magistrate court for indiscriminate dumping of refuse, the state government announced on Tuesday, June 23. The convicts were arraigned before the Magistrate Court in Bolade, Oshodi, and pleaded guilty to the charges.
Court Proceedings and Sentences
Following their guilty pleas, the court convicted and sentenced each defendant to three months' imprisonment. The convicted persons include Jamiu Abdulkareem, Nwosu Martin, Abduljamiu Wasiu, Habeeb Muhammed, Kolawole Elijah, Anum Musa, Adeniyi Jamiu, Taiwo Olaniyi, Ali Muhammed, Paul Yaya, Damilare Adebowale, Ojo Fatai, and Abah Musa.
Government's Commitment to Environmental Laws
Confirming the development to newsmen, the state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the convictions underscore the commitment of the Lagos State Government to enforcing environmental laws and maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment for all residents. The sentencing serves as a deterrent against indiscriminate dumping, which has been a persistent issue in the state.
