Lagos Demolitions Trigger Public Outcry as Residents Are Rendered Homeless
Content creator Fari has raised a significant alarm on social media after witnessing a recent demolition exercise in Lagos that left numerous residents homeless. In an emotional video shared online, Fari described returning from the gym to find homes being pulled down around Silverbed Road, with families suddenly displaced and their belongings scattered along the roadside.
Residents Forced to Flee Without Prior Warning
According to Fari, many of the affected individuals reported receiving no prior notice before the demolition began, forcing them to hurriedly move their properties under duress. During the operation, an argument reportedly broke out, leading security operatives to allegedly fire tear gas, exacerbating the chaos and fear among the residents.
Some residents were seen sitting helplessly beside their salvaged items, visibly uncertain about where to go next. One woman, identified as a tailor, lamented that all her work tools and household items were now exposed outside, with no alternative shelter available for her family.
Fear and Silence Among Victims
Fari also highlighted that many victims were too scared to record the incident or speak out publicly, fearing that their phones could be seized or destroyed during the operation. She emphasized that such situations are common during demolitions in Lagos but often go unreported because affected residents are intimidated into silence.
This incident underscores ongoing concerns about housing rights and displacement in urban areas, calling for greater transparency and compassion in government-led demolition exercises.
