Lagos Seals Establishments, Scrap Yards Over Environmental Violations
Lagos Seals Scrap Yards Over Environmental Violations

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has sealed 23 establishments, including scrap yards, across the state for various environmental violations, the agency announced on Thursday.

Violations and Enforcement Actions

According to a statement by LASEPA, the sealed establishments were found to be in violation of environmental laws, including failure to meet waste management standards, operating without necessary permits, and engaging in activities that pose risks to public health and the environment.

The agency's enforcement team, led by LASEPA's General Manager, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, carried out the operation in several areas, including Ikeja, Oshodi, Isolo, and Amuwo-Odofin.

Dr. Fasawe stated that the sealed establishments include scrap yards, car wash facilities, and other commercial premises that were operating illegally and causing environmental degradation.

“We have sealed 23 establishments today for various environmental violations. These include scrap yards, car wash facilities, and other commercial premises that were operating illegally and causing environmental degradation,” Fasawe said.

Impact on Public Health and Environment

LASEPA emphasized that the enforcement action was necessary to protect the health of residents and the environment. The agency noted that many of the sealed establishments were located in residential areas, where their activities were causing noise pollution, air pollution, and improper waste disposal.

“The activities of these establishments were causing noise pollution, air pollution, and improper waste disposal, which are detrimental to the health of residents and the environment,” the agency said.

According to LASEPA, the scrap yards were particularly problematic as they were burning waste materials, including plastics and rubber, which release toxic fumes into the air. This practice is illegal under Lagos State environmental laws.

Compliance and Future Actions

LASEPA urged all businesses operating in Lagos State to comply with environmental regulations and obtain the necessary permits. The agency warned that it would continue to enforce environmental laws and seal any establishment found to be in violation.

“We urge all businesses operating in Lagos State to comply with environmental regulations and obtain the necessary permits. We will continue to enforce environmental laws and seal any establishment found to be in violation,” Fasawe added.

The sealed establishments will remain closed until they comply with the agency's requirements and pay the necessary fines. LASEPA advised residents to report any environmental violations through its official channels.
