The Lagos State University (LASU) community is in mourning following the death of one of its students, Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, who succumbed to injuries sustained during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos.
The university confirmed the tragic incident in a press release issued on Thursday, signed by the Acting Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Olaniyi Jeariogbe. The statement expressed profound sadness over the loss of Otabor, a student in the Department of History and International Studies, Faculty of Arts, with Matriculation Number 240341269.
According to the university, the attack occurred off campus on the night of Friday, 29th May 2026, when Otabor and his friends were confronted by armed robbers. Upon learning of the incident, the university, through the Acting Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, promptly provided support, escalated the matter to the Vice-Chancellor, and maintained contact with medical personnel involved in his treatment. The institution closely monitored his condition throughout his hospitalization.
Otabor passed away on Tuesday, 2nd June 2026. Following his death, LASU representatives engaged with his family, officials from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), and law enforcement authorities. The university management stated that it is actively cooperating with security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the attack and to bring those responsible to justice.
Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola OLATUNJI-BELLO, mni, NPOM, on behalf of the management, staff, students, and the entire university community, extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones of the deceased. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they mourn this tragic loss,” the statement read.
The university also prayed for strength for the family to bear the irreparable loss and for the soul of Otabor Boluwatife Joseph to rest in perfect peace.
