Maddox Jolie-Pitt Seeks to Remove 'Pitt' from Surname
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's son, Maddox, has officially petitioned to drop the surname 'Pitt' from his legal name, according to a recent report. The 24-year-old filed documents requesting a name change, as reported by TMZ on Thursday, May 28. If granted, his full name would become Maddox Chivan Jolie, removing any association with his father's surname.
The request is still pending approval. This legal move follows Maddox's decision to omit 'Pitt' from his name in the credits of his mother's latest film, Couture. He served as an assistant director on the drama, which starred Angelina, now 50. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2025 and debuted in French theaters on February 18, 2026.
In the end credits of Couture, Maddox was listed simply as Maddox Jolie, and production notes provided to journalists at TIFF also used the name Maddox Jolie. This marked a shift from his previous credit for the 2024 film Maria, where he worked as a production assistant and was credited as Maddox Jolie-Pitt.
Maddox is the eldest of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's six children. The former couple, who separated in 2016, also share Pax, 22; Zahara, 21; Shiloh, 20; and 17-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne. Maddox is not the first sibling to distance himself from the Pitt surname.
In May 2024, Vivienne was credited as Vivienne Jolie in the Playbill for the Broadway musical The Outsiders, which she helped produce alongside her mother. Later that year, in August 2024, Zahara also began introducing herself as Zahara Jolie, dropping 'Pitt' from her name. Shiloh, born Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, legally changed her name to Shiloh Jolie on her 18th birthday, May 27, 2024.
Soon after Shiloh's petition was filed, a source close to Pitt told PEOPLE that the actor was aware of the change. 'He's aware and upset that Shiloh dropped his last name,' the source said. 'The reminders that he's lost his children is, of course, not easy for Brad. He loves his children and misses them.'
