The Cross River State Police Command has apprehended a 49-year-old man, Idris Abdullahi, in connection with the fatal stabbing of a young man in Calabar. The incident, which occurred on June 15, 2026, has sparked heightened security concerns in the area.
Details of the Incident
Police spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the arrest on Monday, stating that the suspect was involved in a confrontation with a group of street youths along Mary Slessor Road on June 14. During the altercation, Abdullahi allegedly sustained injuries. According to Eitokpah, the suspect was attacked at approximately 6:05 p.m. by one of the youths, whose identity remains unknown.
On June 15, Abdullahi reportedly tracked the alleged assailant to his location and pursued him to Chronicle Barracks Road, opposite the Akim Police Barracks. During the chase, the suspect allegedly stabbed the victim with a knife, causing critical injuries.
Medical Response and Aftermath
The victim was rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) for emergency treatment. However, doctors later confirmed that he had succumbed to his injuries. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the General Hospital mortuary for preservation and an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Eitokpah added that the suspect is currently in police custody. The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough investigation and possible prosecution. The police have urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with authorities as they work to ensure justice is served.
