Yobe Police Apprehend Suspect in Disturbing Gender-Based Violence Case

The Yobe State Police Command has made a significant arrest in connection with a harrowing case of gender-based violence. Law enforcement officials have taken into custody a 35-year-old man, Aliyu Yarima, who stands accused of drugging and subsequently raping a 16-year-old girl. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of sexual assault and substance abuse in the region.

Details of the Alleged Crime and Arrest

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdulkarim Dungus, on Monday, January 26, 2026, the arrest followed a distress report received by operatives at the Tarmuwa Divisional Police Headquarters. Preliminary investigations have uncovered a disturbing sequence of events that began on January 16, 2026.

The suspect allegedly lured the teenage victim, whose identity has been withheld for protection, and offered her a soft drink that was secretly mixed with hard drugs. This concoction rendered the girl unconscious, after which Yarima transported her in his vehicle to his residence located in Babbangida town. It was there that the sexual assault is reported to have occurred.

Medical Confirmation and Police Response

The assault resulted in the victim sustaining serious internal injuries, which initially prevented her from reporting the incident immediately. Her health condition deteriorated before she was able to seek help, underscoring the severe physical and psychological impact of such crimes. Upon receiving the report, police operatives acted promptly, rushing the victim to General Hospital in Babbangida for a thorough medical examination. The examination medically confirmed the assault, providing crucial evidence for the case.

Official Condemnation and Call for Public Vigilance

The Commissioner of Police for Yobe State, Emmanuel Ado, has strongly condemned this act of violence. He has directed an immediate, thorough, and discreet investigation to ensure that justice is served for the victim. Commissioner Ado reiterated the Command's unwavering commitment to protecting vulnerable persons, particularly women and children, from such heinous acts.

In light of this incident, the police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to report cases of sexual abuse and other criminal activities promptly to the nearest police station. Timely reporting is essential for effective intervention and the prevention of further harm. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of community cooperation in combating gender-based violence and ensuring the safety of all citizens.
