A 46-year-old man in Zambia has taken his own life following unverified claims that he sexually abused his 15-year-old housemaid. The deceased, David Phiri, worked as an internal auditor at Chadiza Town Council. His body was found on 26th July 2026 at his plot in Jumbe Village, Mambwe District, around 02:00 hours.
Circumstances of the Suicide
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident on 27th July 2026. According to Mweemba, Phiri had been on leave and was staying at the Council Guest House while working on his plot. On 25th July, he was seen drinking beer and playing pool with friends at a bar in Mambwe’s Central Business District. He later left his friends and returned to his plot. Around 02:00 hours, nearby residents heard screams from the direction of his plot but did not check on him.
The following morning, members of the public discovered Phiri lying motionless and alerted police at approximately 07:00 hours. Officers arrived at the scene and identified the body with the help of relatives. A physical examination revealed no visible injuries, but a strong chemical odor was present. Investigators found particles believed to be maize preservative tablets near the body, along with a bottle of whisky.
Allegations of Defilement
Mweemba stated that the motive for the suicide remains unknown.
