Olukanyinsola Odebode, a 30-year-old man, has been sentenced to a 12-year extended prison term after being convicted of raping one woman and sexually assaulting another while he was on bail. The sentencing took place at Swansea Crown Court, where Odebode was found guilty of one count of rape and two counts of assault by penetration.
Offences Across Two Police Areas in Wales
The offences occurred between June 2024 and September 2025, spanning the Gwent Police and Dyfed-Powys Police areas in Wales. The court heard that Odebode raped and sexually assaulted one woman in the Gwent Police area before his arrest. He was subsequently released on bail, and while on bail, he went on to sexually assault another woman in the Dyfed-Powys Police area.
During sentencing, prosecutor Mark Wyeth KC told the court that Odebode posed a danger to women and that his actions had caused “life-altering consequences” for his victims. The prosecution also highlighted the predatory nature of his behaviour, with one victim describing him as “very predatory” and accusing him of humiliating and degrading his victims.
Probation Report and Risk Assessment
The court was presented with a Probation Service report that found Odebode showed a lack of insight into his actions and had completely rejected the jury’s findings. The report concluded that he posed a high risk of serious harm, linked to what it described as “attitudes of entitlement.” This assessment was a key factor in the judge’s decision to impose an extended sentence.
Victim impact statements detailed the emotional and psychological impact of Odebode’s actions on the two women. The court also heard that seven other women had previously reported concerns about Odebode’s sexual behaviour to police since 2019. Those allegations, which included claims of rape, indecent exposure, sexual assault and stalking, did not result in convictions.
Sentencing and Conditions of Release
Odebode, of Gainsborough Road, Cefn Golau, Tredegar, had no previous convictions before this case. His lawyer, Matt Murphy, told the court that he hoped Odebode would develop a greater understanding of his offending while serving his sentence. However, Judge Huw Rees said evidence presented during the trial and reports before the court led him to conclude that Odebode was a “sexually precocious person” and that his behaviour had a “profound” impact on the two victims.
The judge ruled that an extended sentence was necessary because of the risk Odebode posed to the public. Odebode was sentenced to 12 years, made up of nine years in custody followed by three years on licence. He will serve two-thirds of the custodial portion before he can apply for release, with the Parole Board deciding whether he is safe to be released. He will also remain on the sex offenders’ register for life.
