LAWMA Cracks Down on Illegal Dumping
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has secured a four-week jail term for a 56-year-old man, Adebayo Samson, who was convicted for illegally dumping refuse along the PWD axis of Agege Motor Road in Lagos. The conviction, handed down by a Magistrate’s Court in Bolade, Oshodi, underscores the state government's zero-tolerance policy towards environmental violations.
Arrest and Prosecution
According to Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, the offender was apprehended by the agency’s Monitoring and Enforcement Team on Friday, July 24, while illegally disposing of waste at an unauthorised location. The suspect was immediately taken into custody and later arraigned before the court, where he pleaded guilty to the charge. The court subsequently sentenced him to four weeks’ imprisonment.
Environmental Offence Undermines Government Efforts
Gbadegesin described indiscriminate waste disposal as a serious environmental offence that undermines the Lagos State Government’s commitment to maintaining a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment. He warned that anyone caught disposing of waste on roads, road medians, drainage channels, open spaces or any other unauthorised location would face arrest and prosecution without exception.
“I must emphasise that anyone found disposing of waste on roads, road medians, drainage channels, open spaces or any other unauthorised location will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. There will be no exceptions,” he said.
Call for Public Cooperation
The LAWMA boss urged residents to patronise only their assigned Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators and dispose of their waste through approved channels. He stressed that environmental sanitation is a shared responsibility and that everyone must play their part to keep Lagos clean. Gbadegesin also assured residents that the agency would continue to strengthen surveillance and enforcement operations across the state, in collaboration with relevant agencies, to curb illegal waste disposal and promote responsible environmental practices that safeguard public health and the environment.
Reporting Violations
To further enhance compliance, LAWMA encouraged residents to report incidents of indiscriminate waste disposal and other environmental violations through its official communication channels. The agency promised prompt investigation and enforcement action against offenders. This case serves as a stern warning to those who flout environmental laws, demonstrating that illegal dumping has serious consequences.
