Man kills church member during service in Zimbabwe

A shocking act of violence disrupted what should have been a peaceful worship service at a Zion Christian Church congregation in Masvingo, Zimbabwe, leaving one man dead and the entire community in mourning.

The Tragic Incident

On November 9, 2025, what began as a routine church service turned deadly when 33-year-old Sam Togara allegedly struck and killed his 23-year-old churchmate, Emmanuel Shanganai, with a wooden log. The two men, who were neighbors and familiar with each other, had been engaged in an argument that escalated during the worship service.

According to eyewitness accounts, the disagreement between the two men started inside the church building before turning violent. In a sudden and brutal act, Togara reportedly grabbed a heavy piece of timber and struck Shanganai with tremendous force. The attack was so severe that the victim collapsed immediately, bringing hymns and prayers to an abrupt halt as the stunned congregation watched in disbelief.

Emergency Response and Aftermath

Emergency services were quickly summoned to the scene, but their efforts proved futile. Emmanuel Shanganai was pronounced dead at the scene, having succumbed to his injuries instantly. His body was subsequently transported to Ndanga Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

The Masvingo police moved swiftly, arresting Sam Togara in connection with the killing. Police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the arrest and provided details about the ongoing investigation.

Police Condemnation and Public Warning

Inspector Dhewa expressed strong condemnation of the violent act, particularly emphasizing the inappropriate nature of such behavior in a sacred space. "We have arrested Sam Togara who is suspected of killing Emmanuel Shanganai during a church service," he stated. "He is assisting with investigations."

The police spokesperson went further to issue a stern warning to the public against resolving personal disputes through violent means. "We urge members of the public to stop solving their problems through violence," he emphasized. "Do not turn prayer meetings into boxing matches."

This tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising concerns about conflict resolution and the sanctity of worship spaces. The fact that both men were not only church members but also neighbors adds another layer of complexity to this heartbreaking story.
